restored 1998; repaired 2004) A single-span Howe truss 109' 10" over
Slippery Rock Creek. Located:
on McConnell's Mill Road, in McConnell's Mill State Park, Slippery Rock
Township, Pennsylvania. Directions: Access to McConnell's State Park is
available from both SR 422 and SR 19. From the jct. of SR 19 and SR 422,
go west on SR 422 for 0.3 mile to the McConnell's Mill State Park entrance.
Turn left and go 0.65 mile to the park direction signs at the crossroads.
Or from the jct. of SR 19 and SR 422, go south on SR 19 for 0.9 mile to
Johnson Road (TR 365); turn right on Johnson Road (TR 365) and go 0.8 mile
to the park direction signs at the crossroads. Follow the signs to the
covered bridge. The
bridge is located just downstream from the restored McConnell's Mill, and
it is still used for traffic in the park. In 1998, the bridge was restored
and reopened to traffic during the week of December 13. The total cost
of the restoration was $349,179.00. On March 10, 2004 the NewCastle
News reported that the bridge was heavily damaged by a tree which fell
dead center in the middle of its roof. Repairs were completed in
2004 at an estimated cost of $100k. The structure rests on cut stone
abutments. It is covered with barn red painted vertical boards on
the sides, open under the eaves for ventilation. The portals and
splash panels are covered with barn red painted vertical boards with battens
and the interior is painted white. The deck consists of crosswise
1" x 6" boards set on edge laminated into sections 4' wide and it has a
asphalt shingle roof. It was listed on the National Register of Historic
Places on June 27, 1980. (Oct 2008) |
