Jefferson
County, Pennsylvania
(WGN
38-33-03) (WGCB PA-33-03): (1975;
repaired 2000) A single-span Kingpost truss 24' 2" over Wakefield
Springs. Located: On Moore Bridge Road (SR 4006), 0.5 mile
west of Richardsville, Warsaw Township. Pennsylvania. Directions:
In Richardsville, Pennsylvania at the jct. of SR 4005 and Moore Bridge
Road (SR 4006) go west on Moore Bridge Road (SR 4006) for 0.5 mile to the
Wakefield Springs Farm. The bridge is on the left side of the road.
The bridge was totally built by William McCracken and the McCrackens welcome
all "bridgers." We were fortunate enough to have had a lengthy
conversation with Mr. McCracken, as well as a personal tour of the bridge.
The bridge was built across the overflow of a spring running from a round,
brick spring house. In May 2000, a family of ground hogs set up housekeeping
near one of the bridge abutments and some work had to be done to repair
the damage. Its Kingpost Truss is hand-hewn timber, salvaged from
an old barn. While it has an authentic Kingpost truss, it is
is not yet old enough to be considered an historic bridge. The structure
rests on cut stone abutments and wing walls. The sides and portals
are covered with barn red painted vertical siding, trimmed in white.
The
floor consists of wide crosswise planking and it has a metal roof that
projects beyond the entrances to provide additional weather protection
for the interior. (Jun 2009) |
