rehabilitated 1988; repaired 1995) A single-span multiple Kingpost
with Burr arch truss 121' 8" over the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.
Located: On Covered Bridge Road (TR 322) McGees Mills, Bell Township,
Pennsylvania. Directions: In McGees Mills, Pennsylvania just
south of the jct. of US 219 and SR 36 continue on US 219 to the bridge
on the left. The only remaining covered bridge in Clearfield County.
Rehabilitated in 1998. On March 19, 1994, under the weight of twenty
inches of snow and an three inches of ice, the roof collapsed. A
rededication ceremony for the repaired bridge was held on October 11, 1995.
It is the most extensively reinforced covered bridge in Pennsylvania having
been heavily reinforced with steel mending plates at the joints of the
Burr arches and angle irons and mending plates on other wooden timbers
as well as a five foot high wall of laminated two by twelve inch planks
banded together with steel plates that run the entire length of the bridges
interior on both sides. The structure rests on cut stone and mortar
abutments reinforced with concrete and cut stone and mortar wing walls.
The sides are covered with barn red painted vertical siding open under
the eves for ventilation. The portals are covered with white painted
horizontal clapboard. The floor consists of
narrow lengthwise planking and it has a shake roof. Also known
as the McGees Mill Covered Bridge. It was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places on April 17, 1980. (Jun 2009) |
