Meiser's Mill Covered Bridge
 Snyder and Junita Counties, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-55-06/WGN 38-34-06)  (WGCB PA-55-06/WGCB PA-34-06): (1907) (Private)  A single-span Burr arch truss 90' over Mahantango Creek.  Located:  On Private Land, east of Oriental, primarily in Snyder County, Perry Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In Oriental, Pennsylvania from the jct. of SR 2023 and SR 2024, go east on SR 2024 for 0.4 mile to a concrete bridge.  The covered bridge can be seen to the left (north).  Continue on SR 2024 across the county line for an additional 0.2 mile to Snapper Road.  Turn left on Snapper Road to the first house on the right side of the road.  The bridge is down the hill behind the old mill on the right   On private property so request permission to visit.  The owner of the bridge, Carol Hoffman, is trying to do everything possible to restore the bridge.  Unfortunately when photographed on September 9, 2006 the bridge was in poor shape.  During the flood of June 28, 2006 that destroyed the West Paden Covered Bridge (WGN 38-19-12) flood waters rammed a tree into its side.  The structure was saved when, during the height of the storm, Carol, her sister and a neighbor were able to saw the tree up and remove it from the bridge.  It has vertical board and batten siding on both sides and portals, a sheet metal roof, and a deck of lengthwise planking laid over crosswise planking.  The structure rests on stone and mortar abutments with stone and mortar wing walls and has no additional steel reinforcements.  The only side openings run lengthwise directly under the eaves.  Also known as the Meisers Mill Covered Bridge, the East Oriental Covered Bridge and the Shaffer Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 10, 1979.  (Sep 2006)
