Millmont Covered Bridge
Union County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-60-01)  (WGCB PA-60-01)(1855; wind damage 2009)  A single-span Burr arch truss 157' 10" over Penns Creek.  Located:  On TR 320, approximately 1.5 miles southwest of Millmont, Harley Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In Hartleton, Pennsylvania, at the jct. of SR 45 and Millmont Road (SR 3003), go south on Millmont Road (SR 3003) for 1.7 miles to the jct. with SR 3004.  Cross over SR 3004 and continue on Millmont Road (SR 3003) turning right (west) just after the modern steel and concrete bridge.  Continue down this road approximately .07 mile and take the first right to the bridge.  There is ample parking on this side of the structure.  A article in the The Daily Item indicated that a wind storm Thursday, February 12, 2009, packing gusts of up to 65 mph blew the roof off the (Millmont) Red Bridge. The bridge, has been closed to traffic since October 1998 had been scheduled to undergo renovations in the spring, but now will need even more work after the wind blew the span’s roof off. It has horizontal, white ship lapped siding on the portals and barn red ship siding the sides walls.  The use of horizontal ship lapped siding gives the illusion the bridge is longer than it is.  The roof is covered with sheet metal, and the deck is lengthwise planking in the center laid over crosswise planking.  There are no side openings other than the lengthwise ones under the eaves.  The structure has an exceptionally long Burr arch with a few reinforcing tie rods and rests on stone and mortar abutments with stone and mortar wing walls.  Also known as the Millmont Red Covered Bridge and the Glen Iron Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 8, 1980.  (Sep 2006)
