Burr arch truss 103' 3" over Pequea Creek. Located: On Penn
Grant Road, between West Lampeter and Strasburg Townships, Pennsylvania.
Directions: In Lampeter, Pennsylvania, go south on Bridge Road (TR
714) for 0.9 mile to a “T” with Penn Grant Road. Turn left to the
bridge. Originally built in 1824 as the Bowman’s Mill Covered Bridge.
In 2001, the mill was torn down and the stones were used to make a stone
fence on the property. Rebuilt in 1875 for $1,860. It's 11'
opening makes it the counties narrowest covered bridge. It has a
clear portal opening of 12' 10" and it rests on stone and mortar abutments
reinforced with concrete and has long stone and mortar wing walls and parapets.
The parapets are capped with concrete. In 1972, one of the wing walls
was partially washed away by Hurricane Agnes flood, and a portion of it
has been replaced with concrete. The bridge has vertical board and
batten siding that is painted barn red on the sides and white on the portals.
In addition to the lengthwise openings under the eaves, it has one narrow
window located in the center of each side. In 1991 the bridge had
a sheet metal roof, which has now been replaced with cedar shake roof.
The high Burr arches are heavily reinforced with large timbers. Also
known as the Pequea 7 Covered Bridge. It was listed on the
National Register of Historic Places on December 11, 1980. (Oct 2004) |
