Pool Forge Covered Bridge
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-36-01)  (WGCB PA-36-01)  (1859) (private)  A single-span, Burr arch truss, 99' 3" over Conestoga Creek.  Located:  Bypassed by Pool Forge Road, between Churchtown, Pennsylvania and Goodville, Pennsylvania, Caernarvon Township.  Directions:  From the jct. of SR 23 and Pool Forge Road, between Churchtown, Pennsylvania and Goodville, Pennsylvania, go south on Pool Forge Road 0.1 mile to the bypassed bridge, on the left side of the road.  On private property so ask permission to visit.  The original cost of construction in 1859 was $1,219.  Historical records indicate that before James Buchanan became President, he met his fiancé at Pool Forge, but she died before they could be married and he became our country's only bachelor President.  In 1973 the structure was bypassed by the contemporary Pool Forge Road, formerly Township Road (TR 679), and left in the hands of the property owner adjoining the bridge.  It is covered with vertical board and batten siding on the sides and legs of the portals and cedar shakes on the gable ends.  It has a sheet metal roof, and stone and mortar wing walls and parapets.  The parapets are capped with concrete.  It is closed to all traffic and is being used as a storage area.  When visited on October 27, 2004 we were unable to get permission to visit the bridge (no one was home at the time) so all photographs were taken using a zoom lens.  Also known as The Yohn’s Mill Covered Bridge and the Wimer Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 11, 1980.    (Oct 2004)
