(WGN

(Private) A single-span Burr arch truss 107' over Muddy Creek.
Located: In Red Run Campground, East Earl Township, Pennsylvania.
Directions: From Red Run, Pennsylvania, go southeast on Red Run Road
(SR 1044) approximately 0.6 mile to the campground, located on the northeast
side of the road. In 1961 the bridge was bypassed by a new modern
steel-and-concrete bridge. Since it was on land adjoining the Red
Run Grist Mill, it was assumed that it belonged to the mill; consequently,
it was presented to the mill owner for a token fee. It now appears
to be part of the Red Run Campground Property. The vertical board
and batten siding are in fair condition but showing signs of age and parts
of the stone and mortar abutments and wing walls were washed away in the
1972 Hurricane Agnes flood. The bridge is still being used for storage.
Between 1961 and the present, the Zimmermans, who operated a carriage house
nearby, used it to refurbish wagons and carriages. The adjoining
campground has also used it as a church. When visited on October
27, 2004, the bridge was closed to all traffic with an iron gate blocking enterance and being
used as a storage building. Also known as the Oberholtzer’s
Covered Bridge, the Red Run Grist Mill Covered Bridge, the Red
Bank Covered Bridge and the Red River Mill Covered Bridge.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 11,
1980.. (Oct 2004) |
