Rex Covered Bridge
Lehigh County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-39-04) (WGCB PA-39-04):  (1858)  A single-span Burr arch truss 138' 5" over Jordan Creek.  Located:  On Jordan Road, northwest of Allentown, North Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In Orefield, Pennsylvania, from the jct. of SR 309 and Orefield Road, go west on Orefield Road for 1.1 miles to Jordan Road.  Turn right and go 0.5 mile to the bridge, which is at the jct. with Horseshoe Road.  The World Guide of Covered Bridges lists the bridges name as Rex.  The Lehigh County tourist pamphlet, Covered Bridges in the Lehigh Valley,  lists the bridges name as Rex's Covered Bridge and there is a plaque on the portal indicating the bridges name as "Rex's Bridge."  It has high double Burr arches which reach a little above the lengthwise openings under the eaves.  The structure rests on stone and mortar abutments with long wing walls that have been faced and capped with white painted concrete.  Older accounts of this bridge indicates that it had stone and mortar wing walls and parapets.  The sides and portals are covered with barn red painted horizontal clapboard boarding.  The interior splash panels are wide white painted vertical boarding and it is open under the eves for ventilation.  The deck consists of wide lengthwise planking over crosswise planking, and it has a slate roof.  Also known as the Rex's Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 1, 1980.  (Jun 2008)
