Rishel Covered Bridge
Northumberland County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-49-05)  (WGCB PA-49-05)(1830; repaired 1998)  A single-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch truss 110' 3.5" over Chillisquaque Creek.  Located:  On Covered Bridge Road (TR 573), approximately 3 miles east of Chillisquaque, between West Chillisquaque and East Chillisquaque Townships, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  From SR 147 North, exit to Montandon, Pennsylvania.  Turn right (east) on SR 45 and go 0.7 mile to Covered Bridge Road (TR 573).  Turn right on Covered Bridge Road (TR 573) and go 1 mile to the bridge.  (Remain on Covered Bridge Road (TR 573); where it meets Ridge Road, bear left.  Covered Bridge Road is marked TR 573 on SR 45 but TR 576 at Ridge Road.)  Some consider this to be the oldest standing covered bridge in Pennsylvania, however, the Statewide Covered Bridge Assessment lists the Hassenplug Covered Bridge (WGN 38-60-03) in Union County as being built in 1825.  If you take into consideration the fact that the Hassenplug Bridge was rebuilt in 1959, this might be considered the oldest remaining original covered bridge.  Except for narrow lengthwise openings under the eaves, the bridge is completely covered with vertical board siding.  The floor deck is composed of runners laid on top of crosswise planks.  The runners were replaced in 1998, along with the wing walls and parapets being repaired.  The Burr arches sandwich a multiple Kingpost truss structure and the roof is made of sheet metal.  Also known as the Montandon Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 8, 1979.    (Apr 2006)
