Montour
and Northumberland Counties, Pennsylvania
(WGN
38-47-01/38-49-01) (WGCB PA-47-01/PA-49-01): (1881)
A single-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch truss 85' 10" over Chillisquaque
Creek. Located: On Bridge Road (TR 308) approximately 1 mile
northeast of Pottsgrove, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, in Liberty
Township, Montour County, Pennsylvania and Chillisquaque Township, Northumberland
County, Pennsylvania. Directions: In Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania,
at the jct. of SR 642 and SR 1027, go east on SR 642 for 0.5 mile to the
jct. with Creek Road (SR 1029). Turn left (north) on Creek Road (SR
1029) and go 0.7 mile to the bridge, which is immediately to the right
on Bridge Road (TR 308). It was originally built near the Gottlieb
Brown Farm at a total cost of $939.00. The bridge straddles the county
line and unlike other bridges that are in two counties with the county
line under the bridge, the county line runs through the structure.
The Burr arch sandwiches a multiple Kingpost framing. It has wide
vertical board and batten siding and the portals are covered with vertical
boards without battens. The structure has stone and mortar abutments,
stone and mortar wing walls, concrete parapets, and a deck covered with
crosswise planking. Also known as the Gottlieb Brown Covered Bridge
and the Gottlieb Covered Bridge. It was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places on August 8, 1979. (Apr 2006) |
