Shenk's Mill Covered Bridge
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-36-30)  (WGCB PA-36-30)  (1855; rebuilt 1855)  A single-span Burr arch truss 95' 9" over Chickies Creek.  Located:  On Erisman Road (TR 372), Rapho Township, Pennsylvania where it meets TR 552, East Hempfield Township, Pennsylvania, just north of Landisville, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  From the Landisville, Pennsylvania exit of SR 283, go north on Spooky Nook Road (TR 711) for 0.5 mile to Shenks Road (TR 346).  Turn left and go 0.7 mile to Erisman Road.  The bridge is just to the left on Erisman Road.  The first covered bridge on this site was built in 1847 at a cost of $650 and rebuilt in 1855 a a cost of $837.  This bridge is unusual for Lancaster County for several reasons:  It has horizontal clapboard siding, two long horizontal windows on either side of the eastern end of the structure, and the Burr arch is only about half as high as similar structures in the county.  It is built on stone and mortar abutments that extend on either end into wing walls and parapets.  The original Schenk farmhouse and mill are still standing.  The Statewide Covered Bridge Assessment lists an additional name for the bridge as the Big Chickies 4 Covered Bridge.  Also known as the Schenk's Mill Covered Bridge and the Shenck's Mill Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 10, 1980.  (Oct 2004)
