A single-span Burr arch truss 101' 10" over Chickies Creek. Located:
On Siegrist Road (TR 360), Rapho Township, Pennsylvania, where it
meets TR 669, in West Hempfield Townships, Pennsylvania. Directions:
In Silver Springs, Pennsylvania, go west on SR 23 for approximately 1 mile
to Prospect Road (SR 4001). Turn right (North) on Prospect Road (SR
4001) for 0.5 mile to Siegrist Road (TR 360); turn left on Siegrist Road
(TR 360) for 0.7 mile to the bridge. The Bridge was originally built
at a cost of $1,872. The name was changed from Moore’s Mill Bridge
to Siegrist's Mill in 1895 when the Siegrist family purchased the mill.
This is one of the few bridges that withstood the fury of Hurricane Agnes
in 1972. Even though it had over five feet of water in the bridge,
it suffered only minor damage. The structure has a slight camber,
meaning that it arches upwards in the middle. It is supported on
concrete abutments and has stone and mortar wing walls and parapets.
The structure is covered with vertical board and batten siding, which is
painted barn red on the sides and white on the portals. The
roof is covered with cedar shakes. It is also known as the Moore’s
Mill Covered Bridge. The Statewide Covered Bridge Assessment
lists Big Chickies 6 Covered Bridge as another documented
name. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on
December 10, 1980. (Oct 2004) |
