Shoemaker Covered Bridge
Columbia County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-19-06) (WGCB PA-19-06)  (1881)  A single-span Queenpost truss 48' 1" over West Branch Run .  Located:  On Shoemaker Bridge Road (TR 853), just northwest of Sereno, Pine Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In Iola, Pennsylvania from the jct. SR 42 and Legion Road (SR 4024), go west on legion Road (SR 4024) 0.15 mile to Maple Ridge Road (TR 619), turn right and go 0.45 mile to Shoemaker Bridge Road (TR 853), bear right on Shoemaker Bridge Road (TR 853) for 0.5 mile to the bridge.  Named after Joseph Shoemaker, a nearby farmer and lumberman.  It was built at a cost of $322.00.  One of the its wing walls is shorter than the other because the road curves sharply at the foot of the mountain.  Covered with vertical boards and batten siding on both the sides and portals.  The sides have lengthwise openings under the eaves, and there is a narrow window at the end where the road curves, to provide a view of oncoming traffic.  Its deck consists of crosswise planking, and the structure rests on stone and mortar abutments with stone and mortar wing walls.  One diagonal of the Queenpost truss has been reinforced with steel U-channels.  The bridge was closed to traffic in 1996.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1979.  (Apr 2006)
