St. Mary Covered Bridge
 Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-31-01)  (WGCB PA-31-01)  (1889; repaired 1996)  A single-span Howe truss 64' 8" over Shade Creek.   Located:  On Covered Bridge Road (TR 358), 2.5 miles north of Shade Gap, Cromwell Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In Shade Gap, Pennsylvania at the jct. of SR 35 and SR 522, go north on SR 522 for 2.4 miles to Covered Bridge Road (TR 358).  Turn right on Covered Bridge Road (TR 358) to the bridge, which is located directly across SR 522 from St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church.  The bridge is heavily reinforced with steel.  The lower half of the exterior walls are covered with barn red painted vertical boards, and the matching half of the interior walls are covered with barn red horizontal boards.  The exposed upper half of the bridge allows visitors to easily see the white painted Howe truss.  The portals have red with white trimmed horizontal boards on the gable ends and barn red vertical boards on the side posts.  The structure sits on new concrete abutments, and the old, stone and mortar wing walls are still standing well below road level.  In 1966 it was repaired after flood waters ripped a large hole in the south side of the bridge.  There is a plaque mounted on the portal indicating "Huntingdon County Bridge No. 8 St. Marys Bridge."  However, when the World Guide Number was assigned it was known as the St. Mary Covered Bridge with a alternate name of the Shade Gap Covered Bridge.  Also known as the Saint Mary's Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 20, 1980.   (Sep 2006)
