Cumberland
and York Counties, Pennsylvania
(WGN
38-21-13/38-67-04) (WGCB PA-21-13/PA-67-04) (1867;
moved and rebuilt 1971-72) A single-span Burr arch truss 106' 5"
over Yellow Breeches Creek. Located: On the Messiah College
campus, Grantham, Pennsylvania, between Upper Allen Township, Cumberland
County and Monaghan Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Directions:
At the northeast end of Grantham, Pennsylvania, at the jct. of West Lisburn
Road (SR 2004) and Grantham Road, go south on Grantham Road for 0.25 mile
to a "T" intersection on the Messiah College campus. Turn right at
the "T" and go 0.4 mile, passing all the parking areas, to a "Y" intersection.
Turn left at the "Y" and follow the road for 0.1 mile to the bridge.
Turn right over the bridge to the athletic field parking area. Originally
built in 1867 near Bowmansdale, Pennsylvania, just north of Grantham, Pennsylvania.
In 1971, the bridge was acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Jacob S. Stoner
they donated it to Messiah College, where the college students rebuilt
it. It was completed in 1972 and the Burr arch was altered extensively
when rebuilt. It can no longer be considered an authentic historic
structure because of the extensive reconstruction. The bridge, before
moved, was 165' long. It is covered with vertical board and
batten siding on both sides and portals, and has a shaker roof. A
concrete deck is laid over three heavy, lengthwise concrete beams.
In addition to the openings under the eaves, the bridge has one long, narrow
window on one side and two on the other side. The structure rests
on concrete abutments that extend to long concrete wing walls which are
topped with stone and mortar parapets that rise approximately two and one
half feet above road level. Also known as the Bowmansdale Covered
Bridge. (Apr 2005) |
