Turn left on Thomas Covered Bridge Road (TR 415) and go 0.3 mile to the

The original 1879 bridge was built at a cost of $545.00. Reconstruction
of the bridge was completed on June 23, 1998 at a cost around 1 million.
It is virtually a new bridge because little of the original 1879 bridge
remains. The structure rests on new stone faced concrete abutments
which are a little higher than the original abutments. It has short
road level wing walls. It also rests on massive steel stringers to
support the Town lattice truss The sides are covered with barn red
painted vertical boarding and the portals are covered with white painted
vertical boarding. Open under the eaves for ventilation. The
floor consists of wide lengthwise planking and it has a sheet metal roof
that
projects beyond the entrances to provide additional weather protection
for the interior. When the railroad
was constructed in this area in the early 1900s the bridge was also known
as the Thomas Station Covered Bridge and the Thomas Ford Covered
Bridge. The original 1879 structure was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places on August 3, 1979. (Jun 2009) |
