Trostletown Covered Bridge
Somerset County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-56-10)  (WGCB PA-56-10) (1845; restored 1993-1996)  A three-span multiple Kingpost with Queenpost Truss, 104' 1" over Stony Creek.  Located:  In Stoystown Lions Club Park, Stoystown, Quemahoning Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In Stoystown, Pennsylvania, at the jct. of US 30 and SR 103, go west on US 30 for 0.15 mile to Stoystown Lions Club Park Road.  Turn left and go 0.2 mile to the parking area.  The bridge is to the left as you approach the parking area.  The Stoystown Lions Club undertook the project of restoring and preserving the bridge in 1965.  The project took place over a three year period from 1993 to 1996.  It was rededicated on September 28, 1996.  The structure stands on its original cut stone abutments and stone and mortar piers.  Its roof is covered with regular roof shingles, and the deck consists of crosswise planking.  The portals and sides are covered with random width vertical boards with the top one third of the sides  open, exposing the rather distinctive truss structure, which has additional diagonal supports on both steel rods and wooden timbers.  The World Guide lists the bridge as a multiple Kingpost with Queenpost truss although other sources indicate that it is only a multiple Kingpost truss.  From the parking lot, a Kingpost truss spans from the abutment to the first pier, another Kingpost truss spans from the pier to the other pier, and a Queenpost truss spans from the second pier to the far abutment.  With this configuration it would be considered a multiple Kingpost with Queenpost truss.  Also known as the Kantner Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 11, 1980.   (Oct 2005)
