Burr arch truss 62' 3" over Haupts Run. Located: In Somerset
Historical Center, approximately 4 miles north of Somerset, Middlecreek
Township, Pennsylvania. Directions: Approximately 4 miles north
of Somerset, Pennsylvania, at the jct. of SR 601 and SR 985, go north on
SR 985 for 0.1 mile to the entrance to Somerset Historical Center.
Turn left into the parking lot. The bridge is located in the historic
display area at the bottom of the hill and is visible from the parking
lot. The bridge was originally located over Cox Creek, approximately
4 miles south of Somerset, Pennsylvania. The structure rests on poured
concrete abutments and has random width vertical board covering the portals
and the lower half of the exterior sides. The lower three feet of
the interior sides are also covered. It has a cedar shake roof, and
the deck consists of crosswise planking. Its Burr arch is made of
seven ply laminated rough cut two by four timber. It is heavily reinforced
with steel I-beams. Closed to vehicular traffic. Also known
as the Walters Mill Covered Bridge and the
Cox Creek Covered
Bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places
on December 10, 1980. (Oct 2005) |
