Witherspoon Covered Bridge
Franklin County, Pennsylvania 
(WGN 38-28-02)  (WGCB PA-28-02):   (1883)  A single-span Burr arch truss 86' 5" over Licking Creek.  Located:  On an unmarked road, approximately 5 miles southeast of Mercersburg, Montgomery Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions: Approximately 2.6 miles southeast of Mercersburg, where SR 416 and SR 16 divide, continue east on SR 16 for 1.3 miles to Anderson Road (SR 9081/ TR 328).  Turn right on Anderson Road (SR 9081/ TR 328) and go 1.2 miles to an unmarked road, turn left, and go 0.1 mile to the bridge.  (The left turn onto the unmarked road is almost immediately after crossing the river on a one way arch bridge.)  It is the only covered bridge in Franklin County still used for vehicular traffic on a daily basis.  The bridge's sides are covered with vertical board and batten sidding and the portals with hoirizontal board.  It has a sheet metal roof and the deck Is crosswise planks laid diagonally.  The structure rests on stone and mortar abutments, and has relatively long stone and mortar wingwalls that rise to moderately high, concrete-capped parapets.  Also known as the Red Covered Bridge.   (May 2004)
