Lancaster
County, Pennsylvania
(WGN
38-36-14) (WGCB PA-36-14) (1849;
repaired c. 1972). A single-span Burr arch truss 89' over
Cocalico Creek. Located: On Log Cabin Road, west of Brownstown,
Pennsylvania, between Warwick and Ephrata Townships, Pennsylvania.
Directions: In Brownstown, Pennsylvania, from the jct. of SR 272
and Rose Hill Road (TR 797), go north on Rose Hill Road (TR 797) for 0.6
mile to Log Cabin Road. The bridge is just to the left on Log Cabin
Road. Initial cost of the covered bridge was $700. This is
one of Lancaster Counties earliest covered bridges. Up until 1972,
there had been no need for major repairs. In that year, the bridge
even withstood the high waters and strong currents created by Hurricane
Agnes. The water filled the bridge to a depth of 6' 6". Some
of the siding was damaged and part of the road washed away; however, this
turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because it exposed some timbers
that were beginning to rot, and they were quickly replaced. The horizontal
clapboard siding was replaced with vertical boards and battens. The
bridge is also known as the Wenger’s Covered Bridge, the Rose
Hill Covered Bridge and the Cocalico 7 Covered Bridge.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 11,
1980. (Oct 2004) |
