(WGN
39-04-H) (WGCB RI-04-H) (2004) A single-span non authentic Stringer truss with multiple Kingpost and Burr arch truss to support the sides and roof structure 55' over the Moshassuck River. Located: At the entrance to Lincoln Woods State Park in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Directions: SR 123 east 1.5 miles from jct. with SR 126 just west of Lincoln, Rhode Island then south on Manchester Print Works Road, into the park and the bridge a short distance down road. This bridge replaced an uncovered one built in the 1930s that, in 2001, was found to have structural deficiencies and subsequently demolished in 2003. Construction was completed in October 2004 at a cost of $700,000.
Dedication ceremonies were held on October 20, 2004. It is the longest and widest (38' 8") motor vehicle covered bridges in Rhode Island. Eight pre stressed concrete sections fastened into a single slab, set on poured concrete abutments added behind the mortared rough-cut stone abutments of the original bridge, support the structure. A six panel multiple Kingpost truss with laminated Burr arch supports only the roof, as the truss is not attached to the decking. The concrete slab deck is covered with asphalt paving. The sides are uncovered but cedar shingles enclose the gables and reddish brown asphalt shingles cover the roof. A large, single timber guardrail runs along each side of the interior and extends out the entrances along the drop-offs at the sides of the asphalt paved roadway. (May 2005) |
