County, Rhode Island
(WGN
39-04-01 #2) (WGCB RI-04-01 #2) (1994) A single-span
Town lattice truss 36' 3" over Hemlock Brook. Located: Just
north of the locality of Foster Center, Rhode Island, within the Foster,
Rhode Island town line. Directions: North of Foster Center,
Rhode Island, at the jct. of US 6 and SR 94, go south on SR 94 for 1.1
miles to Central Pike, turn right onto Central Pike, and go 0.1 mile to
the bridge. In 1986, the Town Council of Foster, Rhode Island decided
to build a covered bridge in their town in honor of Rhode Island's 350th
birthday and Central Pike, where it crosses Hemlock Brook was selected
as the site. On September 12, 1992, a work party started construction
on the two Town lattice trusses. By the end of the month, the trusses
were completed and ready to move to the bridge site. The first weekend
of October 1992 marked the erection of the lattice and roof trusses, with
all the finishing touches added by the end of November. The bridge
was dedicated on May 23, 1993. On September 11, 1993, the bridge
was torched by vandals and by the time the fire department responded, the
bridge was totally engulfed in flames. Twelve days after the bridge
was destroyed, the Town Council approved rebuilding of the bridge and by
November 5, 1994, the bridge was rebuilt and dedicated. The bridge
is built in the traditional Town lattice truss style complete with natural
wood trunnels. The deck consists of crosswise planks laid on edge
with lengthwise runners in the tire track area. Six I beam stringers
support the entire deck structure and its roof is covered with cedar shakes.
The sides and portals are covered with board and batten siding. The
structure rests on concrete abutments that are extended to form road level
wing walls. There is one diamond shaped window located on each side
of the bridge. (May 2005) |
