Campbell's Covered Bridge
Greenville County, South Carolina 
(WGN 40-23-02)  (WGCB SC-23-02) (1909; restored 1964 and 1990; repaired 2001)  A single-span Howe truss 37' 7" over Braverdam Creek.  Located:  In Gowensville, South Carolina on Campbell Covered Bridge Road.  Directions:  From I-26, Exit 1, take  SR 14, west through Landrum, South Carolina and Gowensville, South Carolina to SR 414, on the right.  Follow SR 414 to Pleasant Hill Road, on the left; go 0.4 mile to Campbell Covered Bridge Road, on the right; go 0.2 mile to the bridge.  Since the collapse of Lower Gassaway Bridge, in Pickens County in 1982, Campbell's Bridge is the only authentic historic survivor of  the many historic covered bridges that were once scattered around South Carolina.  Built in 1909, to replace an earlier bridge that was washed away by a flood, on August 24, 1908.  After many years of service, it was closed to motor traffic in 1981.  The bridge was restored in 1964, and again in 1990.  It was again repaired and improved in 2001.  The structure is supported by a four-panel Howe truss, utilizing double timber braces and counter braces with double iron rods, set on mortared natural stone abutments, capped with concrete.  The floor has transverse planking with no wheel treads, but both portals have short planks running longitudinally a short distance into the bridge.  Vertical boarding with batten covers the sides and gables.  Both sides have three buttress braces, boxed in by vertical boarding with battens, on the sides of the braces, and old weathered wood shingles, on the ends of the braces.  The bridge is painted red, the fascia is trimmed in white and it has a tin roof.  Also known as the Campbell Covered Bridge.  (Mar 2006)
