the bridge. Since the collapse of Lower Gassaway Bridge, in Pickens
County in 1982, Campbell's Bridge is the only authentic historic survivor
of the many historic covered bridges that were once scattered around
South Carolina. Built in 1909, to replace an earlier bridge that
was washed away by a flood, on August 24, 1908. After many years
of service, it was closed to motor traffic in 1981. The bridge was
restored in 1964, and again in 1990. It was again repaired and improved
in 2001. The structure is supported by a four-panel Howe truss, utilizing
double timber braces and counter braces with double iron rods, set on mortared
natural stone abutments, capped with concrete. The floor has transverse
planking with no wheel treads, but both portals have short planks running
longitudinally a short distance into the bridge. Vertical boarding
with batten covers the sides and gables. Both sides have three buttress
braces, boxed in by vertical boarding with battens, on the sides of the
braces, and old weathered wood shingles, on the ends of the braces.
The bridge is painted red, the fascia is trimmed in white and it has a tin
roof. Also known as the
Campbell Covered Bridge. (Mar
