(WGN
40-04-a) (WGCB SC-04-a) (1986) A single-span
non authentic Stringer truss footbridge 30' 4" over Big Creek. Located:
In Williamston, South Carolina in Mineral Springs Park. Directions:
From I-85, Exit 27 take SR 20 south to downtown Williamston, South Carolina.
The bridge is located in Mineral Springs Park, off SR 20, on the south
side, at the concrete bridge over Big Creek. The structure is supported
by two steel I-beam stringers, set on mortared rough cut stone abutments.
Longitudinal planks form the floor, which abuts the poured concrete sidewalk
at the downstream portal and the poured concrete approach at the upstream
portal. The sides are open, with a decorative railing. The
upstream side has a covered alcove extending four feet out, with a wood
bench centered on the inside length, allowing egress to the alcove at each
end. Black asphalt shingles cover the roof, which overhangs the portals,
the roof tapering to a point at the peak. A saw-tooth-edged plank
is mounted, on edge, the length of the roof peak, with a small wood spire
above each gable. The gables are enclosed with a narrow wood lattice
enhancing the ornate portals. Six wood posts along each side support
the roof. (Mar 2006) |
