County, South Carolina
(WGN
40-04-b) (WGCB SC-04-b) (1997) A single-span
non authentic Warren truss footbridge 40'3" over Big Creek. Located:
In Williamston, South Carolina in Veterans Park. From I-85, Exit
27 take SR 20 south to downtown Williamston, South Carolina. From
downtown Williamston, South Carolina going south on SR 20, enter Mineral
Spring Park on the left, just before the concrete bridge, where parking
is available. Veterans Bridge is toward the south, beyond the railroad
tracks, in adjoining Veterans Park. It is the only Warren truss covered
bridge in South Carolina and unique in that the steel trusses are below
the decking, rather than in the walls. The walkway is supported by
three, steel, thirteen-panel Warren trusses, placed under the flooring
which are set on abutments built from wood utility poles, placed upright
in the ground and aligned transversely to the bridge. The roof is
post supported and is not tied directly to the the Warren truss.
The flooring consists of transverse planks, set on the steel trusses, which
extend down the ramp, on the right downstream end. The open sides
have railings, with banister type posts along both sides extending down
the ramp; under the eaves is a narrow wood lattice. The gables are
enclosed with vertical, facsimile tongue and groove paneling, with the
bottom of the panels cut in the form of an arch over each entrance.
The gray, asphalt-shingled roof is supported along each side by seven wood
posts. All wooden surfaces are coated with a brown stain.
