Rutland
County, Vermont
(WGN 45-11-09)
(WGCB VT-11-09): (1880; repaired 2002) A single-span Town
lattice truss 112' 4" over the Cold River. Located: South of
Rutland, Vermont on Upper Cold River Road. Directions: US 7
south of Rutland, Vermont to left on Cold River Road 0.9 mile to right
at T-intersection. Continue another 3 miles to where Cold River Road
makes a wide swing to the right. Upper Cold Mill Road is easy to
miss because it dives downhill and the sign is hard to see. Look
for a road sign indicating 8' 11" a warning that the bridge has lower than
normal clearance. Below that sign is another warning that the road
is not maintained in the winter. The bridge is located 0.2 mile down
Upper Cold River Road. The bridge was built by Nicholas Powers when
he was 63 years old. It was his last and is a fitting monument to
one of Vermont's master builders. With the exception of added iron
tie-rods between the trusses, the bridge structure remained virtually unchanged
until the siding and two sections of chords, eight lattice members and
one rafter were replaced in June 2002. It is still one of the most original
Town lattice covered bridges in Vermont. Gray weathered vertical
boarding covers the sides, portals and weather panels, open under the eaves
for ventilation. The floor has lengthwise planking and runners and
a gray slate roof. Named for a nearby resident. Also known
as the Hollow Covered Bridge (from the hollow it sits in). It was
listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 1974.
