Caledonia County, Vermont
(WGN 45-03-04) (WGCB VT-03-04):  (1881; new roof 2002)  A single-span Queenpost truss 66' 1" over the South Wheelock Branch of the Passumpsic River.  Located: NW of Lyndon, Vermont on West Street.   Directions:  0.2 mile south of jct. I-91, exit 23 on US 5 then left on South Wheelock Road 0.3 mile to left on West Street 0.1 mile to the bridge.  The roof was added to the existing open bridge in 1881. Its name was derived from a gristmill built near this site sometime before 1817.  A sawmill was added later, hence another name for the bridge.  A new steel roof was installed in the summer of 2002.  The structure is set on a dry stone abutment with a poured concrete cap at the north northeast end and a poured concrete abutment at the south southwest end.  Dark weathered vertical boarding covers the sides to rail height, open above to the eaves.  Light brown painted horizontal boarding covers the interior of the sides to rail height and Vertical boarding covers the white painted portals.  Also known as the Chamberlin Covered Bridge, the Whitcomb Covered Bridge, the Sawmill Covered Bridge and the Little York Covered Bridge. the latter two alternate names were derived from the previous name for the road crossing the bridge, Little York Road and Harold Whitcomb, who purchased the mills in 1905 renaming them Whitcombs Mill.  However, the bridge's name reverted back to Chamberlin Mill after Mr. Whitcomb sold the mills in 1937.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 30, 1974.  (Sep 2003)
