Church Street Covered Bridge
Lamoille County, Vermont
(WGN 45-08-13)  (WGCB VT-08-13):  (c. 1877; rebuilt 1968; repaired 2000)  A single-span Queenpost truss 61' 1" over the North Branch of the Lamoille River (sometimes called the Kelly River).  Located:  At Waterville, Vermont off SR 109 on Church Street.  Directions:   From jct. SR 109 and Church Street in Waterville, Vermont take Church Street 0.1 mile to the bridge.  From the south turn left onto Church Street and from the North turn right onto Church Street.  Note:  The Waterville Town Hall is across SR 109 where you turn onto Church Street.  In the winter of 1967 a truck went through the deck.  It was rebuilt in 1968 with a independent roadway reinforced with four steel beams.  The bridge also survived a fire in 1970 that started at a nearby house, when the firefighters hosed the bridge down.  In October 1999, it was closed due to damage done to some of the internal overhead knee braces and roof stringers by an oversized truck.  The repairs which included the replacement of a few roof boards, the roof crossbeams inside the entrances, all  of the roof knee braces, a roof support post on the upstream side, and a new steel roof were completed in March 2000.  Dark gray weathered, vertical boarding with battens covers the sides, portals and weather panels, open under the eaves for ventilation.  The floor is 3' x 6' boards laid on edge and it has a green painted steel roof.  Also known as the Village Covered Bridge, the Meat Market Covered Bridge, the Waterville Covered Bridge and the Lower Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 16, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
