Coburn Covered Bridge
Washington County, Vermont
(WGN 45-12-02)  (WGCB VT-12-02):  (c. 1840s according to town history but 1851 according to a 1970s nomination for the National Register of Historic Places; repaired 1960-61; renovated 1972-73; repaired 1996-97)  A single-span Queenpost truss 69' 2" over the Winooski River.   Located:  East of East Montpelier, Vermont on Coburn Road.  Directions:  From jct. SR 14 and US 2, continue 2.0 miles south on US 2 to left onto Coburn Road 0.5 mile to the bridge. Note: The left onto Coburn  Road is rather tricky because the road sign is set at a bad angle from US 2 east.  If you pass Goddard College on your left, you've gone to far.  In 1960-61, after it was discovered that the structure was sagging on the west end, due to decayed timbers, it underwent extensive repairs.  During 1972-73 it was again rehabilitated with the installation of a cement floor and three supporting steel I-beams.  Further restoration to the bridge was made during the winter of 1996-97 when the truss itself was renovated, new sideboards installed and the wood shingle roof was replaced with a steel one.  Gray weathered vertical boarding covers the sides, portals and weather panels, open above the eaves for ventilation and It has a clear coated steel roof.  Also known as the Cemetery Covered Bridge.   It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 9, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
