Codding Covered Bridge
Lamoille County, Vermont
(WGN 45-08-06)  (WGCB VT-08-06):  (c. 1877; reconstructed 1960; new roof c. 2001)  A single-span Queenpost truss 62' 1" over the North Branch of the Lamoille River.  Located:  North of Waterville, Vermont on Codding Hollow Road.  Directions:  From jct. SR 109 and Lapland Road in Waterville, Vermont, take SR 109 north 1.7 miles then right onto Codding Hollow Road 0.1 mile to the bridge.   In 1960. after an accident involving a local contractor's gravel filled dump truck which fell through the floor, the bridge was reconstructed with a independent roadway reinforced with four steel beams.  Circa 2001 a new steel roof was installed.  The bridge provides the only access to the farms and dwellings in Codding Hollow.  The sign on the bridge's portal declaring it the "Kissing Bridge" was placed there, in the 1950's, as a prank, by an out-of-towner.  The prank has since become a local tradition.  Gray weathered vertical tongue and groove boarding covers the sides, portals and weather panels, open under the eaves for ventilation.  The green painted steel roof and the gables project beyond the entrances providing additional weather protection for the interior.  Also known as the Kissing Covered Bridge, the Codding Hollow Covered Bridge, the Jaynes Covered Bridge (after the family who lived near the bridge when it was constructed) and the Upper Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 1, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
