Comstock Covered Bridge
Franklin County, Vermont
(WGN 45-06-04)  (WGCB VT-06-04):  (1883; repaired 1998; renovated 2003-04)   A single-span Town lattice truss 68' 9" over the Trout River.  Located:  At the western edge of Montgomery, Vermont off SR 118 on Comstock Road.  Directions:  From the Montgomery, Vermont town green at the jct. of SR 118 and South Richford Road, take SR 118 west 0.4 miles making a left turn onto South Richford Road (just west of a modern concrete-and-steel bridge) 0.2 miles to the bridge.  Distribution beams have been added under its deck.  The bridge also features a side port unique to the area which exposes the Town lattice truss giving the covered bridge a trim and jaunty look.  Abutments are of irregular stone and laid without mortar.  The west abutment stands on exposed bedrock.  In 1997 a flood washed out the bridges approaches which were repaired in 1998.  Beginning in the latter half of 2003 with work completed in 2004, the bridge was totally restored.  The restoration included repair and/or replacement of deteriorated truss members, removing the old distribution beams and installing new floor beams and flooring.  A new standing-seam steel roof as well as replacing some sideboards on the upstream side and installing new guardrails along the roadway at each portal.  Weathered vertical boarding, with the exception of the new boards, cover the sides.  It is open under the eaves for ventilation and has a long horizontal window opening on the downstream side at the west end.  White painted vertical boards cover the portals and the weather panels inside the entrance.  Lengthwise wood boards cover its floor and the roof is light brown painted steel.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 19, 1974.   (Sep 2004)
