Addison
County, Vermont
(WGN
45-01-01) (WGCB VT-01-01): (1865;
modified 1969; repaired 1992; new roof 2002) A two-span Town
lattice truss 153' 6" over Otter Creek. Located: SE of
Cornwall, Vermont on Swamp Road at the Salisbury, Vermont Town line.
Directions: From jct. SR 4 and SR 30 , go 3.2 miles on SR 30, make
a left on Swamp Road 1.7 miles to the bridge. It is also the
widest spaced plank lattice covered bridge in Vermont (3' 10" vs 3' average).
In 1969, as part of a renovation project, a pier was erected in midstream
to provide additional support to the long structure. Prior
to the addition of a center pier in 1969, it was the longest single span
Covered Bridge in Vermont. Jan Lewandoski made repairs to the truss
and chords and replaced the bedding timbers under the chords at the abutments
at a cost of $50,000.00 in the winter of 1992. In the summer of 2002,
at a cost of $25,000.00, some roof boards were replaced and a green painted
standing seam steel roof was installed replacing the previous corrugated
metal roof. Its floor has diagonal planking with two lengthwise runners.
Gray weathered vertical boarding covers the sides to the eaves, as well
as the weather panels inside the entrances and the portals. Other
historical names for the bridge include: The Station Covered Bridge,
the
Creek Road Covered Bridge, the
Cedar Swamp Covered Bridge,
and the Otter Creek Covered Bridge. It was listed on
the National Register of Historic Places on September 10, 1974. (Sep
