Franklin
County, Vermont
(WGN
45-06-09) (WGCB VT-06-09): (1883;
repaired c. 2000) A single-span Town lattice truss 58' 9"
over West Hill Brook. Located: West of Montgomery, Vermont on an
abandoned portion of Creamery Bridge Road. Directions: From
the Montgomery, Vermont town green at the jct. of SR 118 and South Richford
Road, take SR 118 west to left onto West Hill Road. (Note: West Hill
Road forms a loop and either turn off will take you to Creamery Bridge
Road. If you choose the first turn (left) onto West Hill Road off
of SR 118 you will make a right onto Creamery Bridge Road, conversely if
you choose the second turn (also left) you would make a left onto Creamery
Bridge Road. Having traversed the entire road, I suggest you take
the second left onto West Hill Road because it is the shorter distance
over the gravel road to the bridges parking area.) From the second
left onto West Hill Road, go 2.6 miles to the intersection with Creamery
Bridge Road. Turn left on Creamery Bridge Road 0.7 miles to a turn
around/parking area (the road has been abandoned from this point to the
bridge). Walk down the hill a short distance to the bridge.
There is a natural waterfall at the bridge. The foundations of the
old creamery are at the east end of the bridge. Due to structural
deficiencies, the bridge was closed to traffic in the summer of 1994.
Although the road has been abandoned, in 2002 many roof boards were replaced
and a new green painted steel roof was installed as well repairs to its
floor, replacing missing boards on the sides, portals and the weather panels
inside
the entrance. Dark weathered vertical boarding, covers the sides
and portals, the weather panels inside the entrance and it is open under
the eaves for ventilation. The bridge once again appeared to be relatively
stable. Also known as the West Hill Covered Bridge (derived
from the nearby community) and the
Crystal Springs Covered Bridge.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 31,
1974. (Sep 2004) |
