Emily's Covered Bridge
Lamoille County, Vermont
(WGN 45-08-12)  (WGCB VT-08-12):  (1844)  A single-span Howe truss 48' 5" over Gold Brook.  Located:  SW of Stowe, Vermont on Covered Bridge Road.  Directions:  From jct. SR 108 and SR 100 in Stowe, Vermont, take SR 100 1.8 miles south to left (east) on Gold Brook Road.  At the 0.3 mile point, Gold Brook Road comes to a four-way intersection.  Gold Brook Road goes to the left regardless of any other signage.  About 1 mile from the intersection, you will come to another four-way intersection.  The bridge will be visible to your left on Covered Bridge Road.  The only Howe truss highway bridge in Vermont.  There are at least three stories about how the name "Emily's Bridge" came about:  (1) In the 1800's, Emily was jilted by her fiancé and hung herself from the rafters; (2)  In 1925, homely Emily fell in love with Donald, who got her pregnant.  When Emily's father insisted that Donald marry Emily, Donald killed himself here. After the birth of twins, Emily followed suit; and (3) (Date unknown) Emily died after her horse threw her here; she was on her way to her wedding.  Another legend indicates that people named Emily or involved with an Emily met violent deaths at this bridge. Whatever the truth behind the name, there are numerous "eyewitness" accounts of Emily's ghost continuing to haunt the bridge. Vertical boarding covers the sides, portals and weather panels, open under the eaves for ventilation. Its galvanized roof and gables project beyond the entrances providing additional weather protection for the interior.  Dark brown stain covers the bridge and wire mesh is secured to the interior sides to discourages graffiti.  Also you can pan for gold near the bridge, hence the name "Gold Brook Bridge."  Also known as the Stowe Hollow Covered Bridge and the Gold Brook Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 1, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
