Greenbanks Hollow Covered Bridge
Caledonia County, Vermont
(WGN 45-03-01) (WGCB VT-03-01):  (1886; c. 1959 pillar added; reinforced 1976; rebuilt 2002)  A single-span Queenpost truss 74' 4" over Joe's Brook.   Located:  South of Danville, Vermont on Greenbanks Hollow Road.  Directions:  From US 2 in the center of Danville, Vermont, go south on the middle of three roads 0.9 miles then right on Greenbanks Hollow Road 1.8 miles to the bridge.  A fire in 1885 destroyed a mill, a store, several farms and the covered bridge. The present bridge was built to replace the burned structure.  Apparently, the original bridge was built without a roof.  Prior to 1959, a double round pillar pier set, in a poured concrete base was added.  Then in 1976 two steel I-beam stringers were added above the floor on the inside of the trusses tied by iron rods to the lower chord, along with a supporting concrete center pier.  In 2002 the bridge was rebuilt at a cost of $315,000.00.  This included rebuilding the abutments, removing the steel I-beams and the center pier, repairing or replacing the truss, replacing the flooring and installing a new steel roof.  During the rebuilding process the side boarding was stolen and was subsequently replaced.  Unpainted vertical boarding covers the gables and the sides to 5' 4" above the floor, open above to the eaves.  Vertical boards also cover the interior weather panels to rail height.  The interior of the bridge is painted white and it features a green painted steel roof.  Both the roof and gables project beyond the entrances to provide additional weather protection for the interior.  The bridge is slightly trapezoidal at its southwest portal.  A Bronze Plaque mounted on a stone by the bridge portal reads:  "Historic Site Greenbanks Hollow Covered Bridge 1886 Danville."  Also known as the Greenbank Hollow Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 13, 1974.  (Oct 2003)
