Hopkins Covered Bridge
Franklin County, Vermont
(WGN 45-06-01)  (WGCB VT-06-01):  (1875; repaired (date unknown); rehabilitated 1999)  A single-span Town lattice truss 90' 8" over the Trout River.  Located: NW of Montgomery, Vermont  just off SR 118.  Directions:  From the Montgomery, Vermont town green at the jct. of SR 118 and South Richford Road, take SR 118 1.1 miles west past the Longley Covered Bridge (WGN 45-06-08) an additional 1.4 miles to the bridge on your left just off SR 118. Prior to its 1999 rehabilitation, previous repairs (date unknown),  included two steel beans cantilevered from west abutment to support ends of bottom chords.  In 1993 the structure was closed as being unsafe for traffic and bypassed by a temporary bridge.  In 1999, at a cost of $320,649.00, the bridge was completely renovated.  The renovations included repairing and/or replacing lattice members; replacing the lower chord and the lower secondary chord; its siding and flooring; replacing the corrugated metal roof with a standing-seam steel roof and replacing the knee braces.  Gray weathered, vertical double-layered boarding covers the sides, portals and inside weather panels.  The floor consists of crosswise planking with two lengthwise runners and its roof is painted gray.  An interesting feature of the restored structure is that it has two thickness of vertical board siding, to make it more difficult for vandals to remove them.  The bridge is again open to motor vehicle traffic and serves a farm on a dead-end road.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 30, 1974. (Sep 2004)
