Orange
County, Vermont
(WGN
45-09-07) (WGCB VT-09-07): (1879;
repaired 1994; new roof 2002) (Private) A single-span multiple Kingpost
truss 74' 5" over the First Branch of the White River. Located:
North of South Tunbridge, Vermont off SR 110 on Belknap Hill Road.
Directions: About 1 mile north of South Tunbridge, Vermont on SR
110 then just right at Belknap Hill Road to the bridge. The Howe
family, which owns the adjacent farm, decorates the bridge with flowers
in the summer. In 1994 repairs were made including the deck and floor
beam replacement. In 2002 the bridges roof was replaced with a standing-seam
steel roof which included replacing the roof boards and the unusual roof
knee brace, which extend above the roof beams to the top of the opposing
knee brace for improved lateral stability. The bridge is on private
property but the Howes are very accommodating to photographers and visitors.
Make sure you park in the driveways and not on the lawns. Inside
the bridge the Howes have, for years, kept a homemade ladder. When
ask why, the reply was "It's always been there." Gray weathered
vertical boarding covers the sides, portals and weather panels. The
floor has lengthwise planking and its silver painted steel roof and gables
project beyond the entrances to provide additional weather protection for
the interior. The structure does exhibit a slight camber.
Also known as the Howe Farm Covered Bridge, the Mill Covered
Bridge and the Upper Covered Bridge. It was listed on
the National Register of Historic Places on September 10, 1974. (Sep
