Franklin
County, Vermont
(WGN
45-06-07) (WGCB VT-06-07): (1883;
repaired c. 1968-69; new roof 2002) A single-span Town lattice
truss 77' 1" over the South Branch of the Trout River. Located:
South of Montgomery Center, Vermont just off SR 118 on Hutchins Road.
Directions: From jct. of SR 118 and SR 242 in Montgomery Center,
Vermont, take SR 118 south 1.2 miles and turn right (west) onto South Brook
Road and almost immediately bear right onto Hutchins Bridge Road 0.2 mile
to the bridge. There are waterfalls below bridge and the foundations
of butter tub mill near the eastern portal. Circa 1968-69, steel
I-beams were installed above the floor to the inside of each truss, with
wire rope loops securing the lower chord to the I-beams to strengthen the
bridge for truck traffic. In 2002, a new green painted standing-seam
steel roof was installed which included the replacement of some roof boards
and a few rafters. The bridge is located on a dead-end road with
no alternate routes. Dark weathered, vertical boards covers the sides,
open under the eaves for ventilation, except the lower quarter of the upstream
side which is covered with horizontal boarding. Barn red painted
vertical boards cover the portals and the weather panels inside the entrance.
It has crosswise floor planks with two lengthwise runners. It was
listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 30, 1974.
