Joe's Pond Memorial Covered Footbridge
Caledonia County, Vermont
(WGN 45-03-a) (WGCB VT-03-a):  1977)  A single-span non authentic Stringer truss 37' over Joe's Pond.   Located: in Danville Township in West Danville, Vermont, at a small park off US 2 across from the jct. with SR 15.  Directions:  From Danville, Vermont, take US 2 west to West Danville, Vermont to the jct. with SR 15.  The bridge is just before the junction on the left side of the highway, over Joes Pond outlet at the public parking area.  The footbridge rests on the old abutments of the Upper Falls Covered Bridge that carried US 2 over Joes Brook prior to the construction of a new iron bypass bridge in 1936.  The Upper Falls Covered Bridge was dismantled in 1937.  The lumber used to build the structure was salvaged from a three-bay garage that was dismantled across the highway.  Two large steel I-beams, set on large concrete blocks on top of old, dry rough cut stone abutments support the bridge.  Dark gray weathered vertical boarding covers the gables and the sides to rail height, open above to the eaves.    Poured concrete forms the floor and the roof is covered with old gray weathered, wood shakes.  A marker by the bridge states that it was "Erected in honor of all those past and present who contributed to the spirit of this community."  Also known as the Indian Joe Memorial Covered Footbridge and the West Danville Covered Footbridge(Oct 2003)
