Kingsbury Covered Bridge
Orange County, Vermont
(WGN 45-09-02)  (WGCB VT-09-02):  (1904; roof repaired 1958; closed to traffic 1978; restored 1980; closed c. 1990s; restored 1994; new roof 2002)  A single-span multiple Kingpost truss 46' 1" over the Second Branch of the White River.  Located:  South of South Randolph, Vermont off SR 14 at Kingsbury Road.   Directions:  From jct. SR 14 and SR 107, go right (West) on SR 107 4.5 miles (an octagonal library building is visible 0.4 mile from the bridge) to a left on Kingsbury Road.  The bridge is quite near SR 14 and highly visible. It was first closed in 1958 when heavy snows collapsed the roof.  Repairs were made and the bridge reopened the same year.  The structure was once again closed in the summer of 1978 when it was deemed unsafe for traffic.  While closed, it was used by a farmer to store equipment for the winter.  It was restored and reopened in 1980.  After being damaged by ice in the early 1990s, the bridge was once again closed.  In 1994 it underwent major repairs which included repairing and/or replacing parts of the upper and the lower chord as well as replacing some truss members and bracing.  After the repairs were completed, it was once again reopened to traffic.  In 2002 a new standing-seam steel roof was installed. Dark weathered vertical boarding covers the sides, with a separate short row of boards under the eaves, the portals and the weather panels.  The floor has crosswise planking with two lengthwise runners and its steel roof is painted black.  A sign on the bridges portal indicates "S. Randolph, VT."  Also known as the Hyde Covered Bridge, the East Bethel Covered Bridge and the South Randolph Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 30, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
