Kingsley Covered Bridge
Rutland County, Vermont
(WGN  45-11-03) (WGCB VT-11-03):  (1870; repaired 1950; restored 1985; roof repaired 1999; new roof 2002) A single-span Town lattice truss 120' 6" over the Mill River.  Located:  At the village of East Clarendon, Vermont on George Road.  Directions:  South of Rutland, Vermont. At jct. of US 7 and SR 103  go another 0.3 mile on US 7, to right on Airport Road.  Go 1.4 miles past the airport to right on on George Road 0.1 mile to the bridge.  Some accounts have the bridges original construction date as 1836 others 1870.  It is possible the original 1836 bridge was destroyed during a flood on October 4, 1869 and rebuilt in 1870.  It was closed for repairs in 1950 and again in 1985 for restoration and reopened in May 1987.  There are steel cables on all four corners to give lateral reinforcement, but its basic structure remains unchanged from the original construction.  Its roof was damaged around November 1998 during a storm and repaired in 1999.  In 2002, a new standing-seam steel roof was installed at a cost of $17,000.00.  Gray weathered vertical boarding covers the sides, portals and weather panels.  The floor has lengthwise laminated 2" by 6" planks, placed on edge with six 2 inch thick wheel treads and it has a green painted steel roof.  Named after John H. Kingsley who operated the mill. A waterfall and restored mill are nearby.  Also known as the Mill River Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 12, 1974.  (Sep 2003)
