Bennington
County, Vermont
(WGN 45-02-A) (WGCB
VT-02-A): (1975; modified 1977) (private) A non authentic single-span,
plank decked steel Stringer, with a wooden Town lattice truss cover 33'
over the Green River. Located: Near the village of Sandgate, Vermont. Directions:
Go 3.7 miles west on SR 313 from its intersection with SR 7A, or go .5
mile east on SR 313 from the West Arlington Bridge (WGN
45-02-01) to north on Sandgate Road 2.5 miles to the covered bridge
on the right (east) side of the road. The bridge is plainly visible from
the main road. The basic bridge was built in 1975 by Mr. Kreffer as an
uncovered stringer. In 1977, as a gift to long-time town clerk, Anne Kreffer
when she retired, because she had always wanted to live on a road with
a covered bridge, William and Henry Skidmore, added the Town lattice truss
to support a roof thus it became a covered bridge. The structure is supported
by four large steel I-beams set on poured concrete abutments with wing
walls. The floor has crosswise planking secured to the stringers.
Dark weathered vertical boarding covers the sides and there are large
openings on each side of the bridge exposing the Town lattice roof supports.
The roof is covered with galvanized steel. The rough edges along
the bottom of the upstream side of the bridge were created during a winter
freeze when the entire river froze up to the level of the bottom stringer
of the bridge. Also known as the Kreffer's Crossing Covered Bridge
and the Sandgate Covered Bridge. (Sep 2003) |
