Longley Covered Bridge
Franklin County, Vermont
(WGN 45-06-08)  (WGCB VT-06-08):  (1863; reinforced 1979; Restored 1992)  A single-span Town lattice truss 84' 6" over the Trout River.  Located: NW of Montgomery, Vermont just off SR 118.   Directions:  From the Montgomery, Vermont town green at the jct. of SR 118 and South Richford Road, take SR 118 1.1 miles west to the bridge on your left just off SR 118.  In 1979 it was reinforced with three steel beams cantilevered from west abutment to end of stringers, and the original abutments were capped and faced with concrete.  A complete restoration was made by Jan Lewandoski during the winter of 1992-93 including a new deck, additional floor beams, chord repairs, siding and roof repairs.  The structure is set on poured concrete abutments with wing walls, except the downstream side at the east end where there is a retaining wall, and on added steel I-beam supports the east end.  Naturally weathered vertical boards covers the sides, open under the eaves for ventilation.  White painted vertical boards cover the portals and the weather panels inside the entrance.  The floor consists of 2' x 4' boards laid on edge with lengthwise runners and it has a galvanized steel roof.  Also known as the Harnois Covered Bridge, the Samuel Head Covered Bridge and the Head Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 30, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
