Montgomery Covered Bridge
Lamoille County, Vermont
(WGN 45-08-14)  (WGCB VT-08-14):  (1887; repaired 1969; reconstructed in 1971; renovated c. 1996; repaired 1997)  A single-span Queenpost truss 70' 2" over the North Branch of the Lamoille River (sometimes called the Kelly River). Located:  North of Waterville, Vermont off SR 109 on Montgomery Road.  Directions:  From jct. SR 109 and Lapland Road in Waterville, Vermont, take SR 109 north 1.2 miles then right on Montgomery Road to the bridge less than 0.1 mile from SR 109.  In early January 1969, snow drifted 5 feet deep on one side of the roof, and the bridge started to shift sideways.  Wilmer Locke wrenched it back into shape and added knee braces and two traverse iron rods across the bridge's top.   Then on August 11, 1971 an asphalt truck crashed through the floor the bridge.  After the second incident, the bridge was reconstructed with an independent roadway, reinforced with four steel beams.   Renovated in 1996 to include replacing all siding and the roof support posts as well as roof beams and knee braces inside the portals.  In 1997 the concrete at the entrance was repaired.  Vertical boarding covers the sides, portals and narrow weather panels, open under the eaves for ventilation.  The floor has crosswise planking without runners and it has a galvanized corrugated steel roof.  It was named for the Dallas Montgomery farm.  Also known as the Lower Covered Bridge, the Potter Covered Bridge (for nearby resident Luke Potter), the Dallas Covered Bridge and the Middle Covered Bridge (middle bridge of three covered bridges in the area over the North Branch of the Lamoille River).  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 18, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
