Lamoille
County, Vermont
(WGN
45-08-07) (WGCB VT-08-07): (1887;
reconstructed 1898; new roof c. 2001) A single-span modified
Queenpost truss 62' over the North Branch of the Lamoille River.
Located: North of Waterville, Vermont on Back Road. Directions:
From jct. SR 109 and Lapland Road in Waterville, Vermont, take SR 109 north
2.4 and make a left turn onto unmarked Morgan Bridge road to the left.
The bridge is a very short distance from SR 109. If you are coming
south on SR 109 from jct. SR 118 and SR 109 in Belvidere Corners, Vermont,
travel 5.6 miles on SR 109 and turn right turn onto the unmarked Morgan
Bridge Road. For reasons unknown, it underwent major and possible
total reconstruction in 1898. Circa 2001 the corrugated metal roof was
replaced with a new standing-seam steel roof, which included replacing
many of the roof boards. The bridge was named for a family that owned
the property across the road at the north end. Dark weathered, vertical,
tongue and groove boarding covers the portals, the inside weather panels
and the sides. There are two opposing horizontal window openings
along each side and it is open under the eaves for ventilation. The
roof and the gables project beyond the entrances providing additional weather
protection for the interior. The floor is lengthwise planking with
runners and it has a green painted steel roof. Also known as the
Upper
Covered Bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic
Places on November 19, 1974. (Sep 2004) |
