Vermont Horse Park on the right across from Smuggler's Notch Resort at
No. 4323. Or, from Stowe at the jct. of SR 100 and SR 108 (Mountain
Road), go north 12.5 miles on SR 108 (Mountain Road) to Vermont Horse Park
on the left. The bridge is clearly visible from SR 108 (Mountain
Road). Built in memory of a covered bridge that once stood near the
site of the current structure. It is restricted to horses and pedestrians.
There is a display of old horseshoes and farm hardware inside the bridge.
The structure is supported by two steel I-beam stringers set on poured
concrete abutments on piled rocks. Dark weathered vertical
boarding covers the sides, portals and weather panels. There are
two large horizontal window openings with window boxes mounted beneath
each opening on each side of the bridge. The floor consists of longitudinal
planking fastened to the steel I-beam and its green painted steel roof
projects beyond the entrances to provide additional weather protection
for the interior. (Sep 2007) |
