The last Kingpost covered bridge built on a public highway in Vermont.
The Kingposts only come part of the way up the bridges sides. Further,
unlike most of Vermont's other Kingpost structures, it actually has wooden
Kingposts not augmented, replaced by or constructed with iron rods.
In 1971 five steel I-beam stringers were added, among other repairs, during
a major renovation. In 1978 the bridge had its siding repaired and
received a new coat of barn red paint. Its original granite abutments
were faced with concrete in 1990. Vertical boarding with batten covers
the sides, portals and weather panels, open
above the eaves for ventilation. It has a galvanized steel roof and
the bridge is painted barn red inside and out. Also known as the
Stoney
Brook Covered Bridge. It was listed on the National Register
of Historic Places on November 20, 1974. (Sep 2004)) |
