Orange
County, Vermont
(WGN
45-09-01) (WGCB VT-09-01): (1883;
distribution beams added (date unknown); new roof 2001) A single-span
Queenpost truss 56' 2" over the First Branch of the White River.
Located: South of Chelsea, Vermont on Moxley Road. Directions:
From jct. SR 113 and SR 110 in Chelsea, Vermont go south on SR 110 2.5
miles to left onto Moxley Road to bridge. Years ago, distribution
beams were added beneath the flooring of the bridge. The bridge features
very long hand-hewn chords and a wooden ramp at north end. Because
the structure crosses the stream at an angle, it is slightly skewed to
meet the abutments. In 2001 several roof boards were replaced and
a new standing-seam steel roof replaced its corrugated metal roof.
Dark weathered vertical tongue and groove boarding covers the sides, portals
and weather panels. The floor has lengthwise planking and its silver
painted steel roof and gables project beyond the entrances to provide additional
weather protection for the interior. Also known as the Guy Covered
Bridge and the Monksley Covered Bridge. It was listed
on the National Register of Historic Places on September 10, 1974.
