Pine Brook Covered Bridge
Washington County, Vermont
(WGN 45-12-12)  (WGCB VT-12-12):  (1872; restored 1977; deck renovated 1989; new roof c. 2001) A single-span Kingpost truss 48' 3" over Pine Brook. Located:  East of SR 100 and north of Waitsfield, Vermont on North Road.  Directions:  From jct. SR 17 and SR 100, go 1 mile north to Waitsfield, Vermont where SR 100 intersects Bridge Street (there is a sign) go east (right) 0.1 mile and cross the Village Covered Bridge (WGN 45-12-14) and continue along Bridge Street to a fork.  Take the left hand road to Waitsfield Common.  Go left on North Road 1.2 miles to the bridge.  The bridge was restored by Milton S. Gratton in 1977 at a cost of $14,000.00.  In order to preserve the bridges authenticity, steel beams were placed 1/2" below the bridge to support any overload on the bridge.  Other work consisted of  raising the deck a foot and a half to keep the deck system dry and in 1989 new roof planks were installed and the floor was re decked.  Circa 2001 the roof boards were replaced and a standing-seam steel roof was installed.  One problem with the bridge resulted when the Kingpost was built with wood that had a spiral grain.  Visibly cracking, it is now secured with a metal clamp.  Gray weathered vertical boarding covers the sides and portals, open above the eaves for ventilation.  Its flooring consists of lengthwise boards set on edge and a black painted roof.  Also known as the Wilder Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 13, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
